Main Street is a national movement that has been around for more than 30 years and has been applied to more than 2,000 communities. Through the passion of community volunteers, the program’s proven four point approach, resources, and assistance have helped these district’s revitalize their downtown and neighborhood business districts. The result is a more vibrant, stable, and sustainable community.
The Four Point Approach
The success of the St. Helens Main Street program is based on its comprehensive nature. By fully integrating four points into a practical downtown management strategy, a local program makes fundamental changes in a community’s economic base:
Organization assembles public/private leaders within communities to work toward the same revitalization goals.
Promotion sells a positive brand image of the commercial district drawing visitors, shoppers and investors downtown.
Design enhances both livability and attraction of the district by rehabilitating historic buildings, creating pedestrian-oriented streets and encouraging context-sensitive new construction.
Business Development strengthens a community’s existing assets while expanding and diversifying its economic base. Main Street sharpens the competitiveness of existing business and attracts compatible new businesses to the district.
Each of the four committees are run by SHEDCO volunteers who are interested in positively impacting the downtown area of St. Helens. To learn more about each committee visit our Committees page or how to become a volunteer for a committee(s) please visit our Volunteer page.
